Anegada: Where the Ocean Meets the Sky

Anegada, perched on the North East rim of the Caribbean chain, combines rugged island beauty with a laid back charm. Sparsely populated and very underdeveloped,  Anegada is a worthy addition to any visit to the BVI, and a great weekend getaway if you are a resident of the rest of the BVI. There are multiple of options for getting around including taxis, scooters and a new Mini-Moke fleet rented through the Anegada Reef Hotel. We recommend the latter, which is a modern version of a 1970’s Caribbean transportation icon.

There is one road, which basically rings the Western half of the island.  Follow it around and hit beach bars like Cow Wreck or Big Bamboo, or divert down sandy tracks to untouched sections of the contiguous beach that circles the island like a ring of white sugar.

Even seasoned islanders like ourselves comment on the colors. The blues and greens of the sea meld with the sky creating a kaleidoscope of aqua, turquoise and blues. One long day or a weekend in Anegada is bliss. We highly recommend this diversion!

Fleur: A Great Summer Print

We love it when we find a good print!  (And can we say it’s not as easy as it may seem…)  Our Summer collection features a few good ones, but perhaps our favourite is the Fleur print, which brings the zest of our favorite season together with large florals and bold colors.

Our inspiration was the rich Caribbean flora that surrounds us. We are crazy gardeners and we love orchids, monsteras and birds of paradise, all tropical plants that thrive in our Tortola garden. We’ve taken the Fleur print and made it into our best-selling linen and knit cotton dresses.

Bonus- the Fleur print is rich in reds, whites and blues making our dresses, shorts & pants great 4th of July wardrobe choices! Shop all of our Fleur women's items online today!

Caribbean Culture: Ruben Vanterpool Tortola Mural

Caribbean Culture: Ruben Vanterpool Tortola Mural

Along a stretch of road on Tortola’s ridge of mountains there is a mural painted by local artist Ruben Vanterpool.  It’s a favorite stop for tourists, but it also catches our eye each time we drive by.  The wall is in sections which capture a aspects of the life in the islands in a bygone era before tourism and, really,  before the Virgin Islands were the destination it is now.  Sections include walking to school, baking bread, attending church, drawing water from a well, making charcoal and more.

Ruben Vanterpool was born near where this mural was painted.  He became a teacher when teachers were both in short supply and the trade was considered a very honorable vocation.  In 1997 he entered politics as the speaker of the house, a post he held for 16-years.  Now he’s a full time artist.  Recently we ran into Mr. Vanterpool as he was doing some touch-up work on his masterpiece.  We stopped to say “hi” and admire this cultural icon.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

The Painkiller Cup, our annual stand-up paddle event, features a unique format.  Each 3-person team must include at least one female paddler.  This year we had several teams with two or more women, with a team from Virginia who called themselves “We’re Having the Most Fun” comprising all women.  They nabbed 5th place overall and collected a $250 share of the $5,000 purse.  The attached photo says it all- they scooped their prize money and went right to the bar.

The annual Painkiller Cup features a 14-mile 3-person team race from Trellis Bay at the top of Tortola to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke.  The course runs the length of Tortola’s North Shore, then across to Sandy Cay and down the South side of Jost Van Dyke.  Really, you could not pick a more beautiful race course.

The best part of the Painkiller Cup is the finish party at Hendo’s Hideaway.  White Bay is a gorgeous beach and Hendo’s is a super-cool beach bar serving great food with plenty of shade so you can relax and enjoy great rum drinks.

Cane Garden Bay Beach - Block Print

At HIHO our zest for graphics is some manifestation of the block printing, drawing & painting courses we endured as kids. Our grandfather was an accomplished painter, sculpture and restorer and mother HIHO put us through the art class drills.

The block print pictured above is of a beach house that sat abandoned beneath the coconut trees at our favourite end of the Cane Garden Bay beach on Tortola. As a boy, Cane Garden Bay was, simply, exquisite. An evenly curving mile of sparkling sand rimmed with tall coconut trees lapped by the clear Caribbean Sea. Without fail we spent every Sunday there.  Our parents would mix cocktails with their friends while we played paddle tennis, built sandcastles and climbed coconut trees. We also cooked burgers on the grill and had a pot of baked beans which our mother would season with onions and molasses. Sadly, this end of Cane Garden Bay is now home to several bars and two hotels. While we still head down there for rum drinks or to go paddling, its a changed beach, still beautiful but sometimes crowded.

Caribbean Surf Season

Winter in the Caribbean means it’s surf season, and surfing is one of our favorite sports.  The British Virgin Islands (our home) is blessed with great waves, with Tortola featuring several standout surf spots.  The surf is up in the BVI (Tortola in particular) any time between November and March.

The most reliable and friendly location is Josiah’s Bay on Tortola’s North Shore where you can rent boards and grab a lesson from Steve at Surf School BVI.  We love surfing because it’s such an easy-going sport.  You hang out with friends sharing waves and having a good time.  Of all sports, surfing has to rank as one of the coolest- mother nature serves up a slice of energy in the form of a wave and you paddle into it and ride it.  That’s pretty amazing!  Here’s a cool photo of Victoria Magnaldi hanging five and making it look easy in our women’s L/S Suntek tee. Here’s How You Can Travel Back to the British Virgin Islands After the Hurricanes

The dreamy archipelago beloved by sailors of every stripe summons its trademark brand of optimism, welcome, and Painkillers.

By TRACEY MINKIN

There are two ways to understand the impact of Hurricane Irma on the British Virgin Islands. One is analytical: The category 5 storm was so violent it triggered seismometers calibrated for earthquakes.

The other is this: "It was like there were demons out in that storm," says Clayvorne Pope while manning the desk at Dive BVI on Scrub Island. She stills her otherwise beaming countenance as she recalls the terror. "If that hurricane had stayed a half hour more, we would not be here," she says. "And it felt like a nightmare afterward, for eight weeks straight."

Baratta Wave Print

We had a conversation with our Wave Print Designer, Anthony Baratta. His beautiful print comes in 4 different dress styles, read all about his inspirations and love for HIHO:

What was your design inspiration for the Baratta Wave Print? The pattern was inspired by a Classical Greek motif called Running Dog. I was drawn to the way that the pattern resembles waves.

What can you share about the color? It’s always a favorite. Blue is a huge part of my designs and everyone looks good in it.

Have you done other fashion collaborations before? Is there anything you can share about this experience with HIHO? We’ve currently collaborating with Max Mara in Italy for a collection that that will be in the stores in next spring. It’s been a fun and fantastic experience working with HIHO! We look forward to seeing more pattern on HIHO clothes.

What do you love about HIHO as a brand? I love HIHO. It’s colorful, smart, and stylish and reminds me of fantastic trips to the Caribbean.

What are your favorite beach locations? My favorite beaches are Fowler Beach in Southampton, NY, Saline Beach in St. Barth’s, and La Fontelina Beach in Capri.

Tell us more about your interior designs! Currently, I’m working on a wide variety of exciting projects in New York, Los Angeles, and Colorado. I’m also designing a new product line for Colonial Williamsburg and redesigning the Governor’s Mansion in my home town of New Jersey

Hook-In-Hold-On: The Origins of our Brand

Conceived in a beach bar in St Thomas the Hook-In-Hold-Race first took place in 1979.  A group of windsurfing friends thought it would be fun to sail up from St. Thomas to the British Virgin Islands.  They wore backpacks with a sleeping bag and some food.  The format was an instant hit and in a couple years Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey stepped in and the event mushroomed! In the 1980’s the Johnnie Walker Hook-In-Hold-On was the biggest event in the new cool sport of windsurfing. It was unique as an island-to-island race where the participants would sleep aboard a yacht which followed the fleet.  All meals were provided, and there was plenty of Johnnie Walker scotch whiskey to drink. A Tortola windsurfer and our very own, Andy Morrell, raced in the event a few times, and copped a first place overall in the 1986 edition.
Johnnie Walker withdrew from the event and it lay dormant for a few years, Following a stint on the windsurfing pro-tour Andy returned as the organiser.  Not much changed, except the name was shortened to HIHO, the acronym of the former Hook-In-Hold-On. Competitors lived aboard a fleet of yachts once again, there were daily windsurfing races between the islands and great nightly parties! The event boasted a cool HIHO Sun graphic T-shirt, which was sold year round in a couple stores in Tortola. Windsurfing manufacture Neil Pryde was an early supporter of the event. The company loved the fun format and that it drew international participation. Bacardi Rum took on title sponsorship in 1995 and while the racing remained serious, the parties became legendary. Bacardi brought great media coverage to the event, including television.
Alongside the burgeoning race, the cool graphic T-shirt was taking on life of its own (see above from 1993). Soon rash guards and beach bags were on offer, then surf shorts and eventually a capsule collection including women’s wear.  It was the beginning of the HIHO clothing collection and slowly, as the race grew, and the rum sponsorship was ceded to Highland Spring water, the HIHO brand evolved. The owners opened a HIHO store in Tortola and by 2005 were introducing the line to stores in the USA.
